About the artist

Dale Chihuly

American

b. 1941

American glass artist. Chihuly studied interior design at the University of Washington. During his time at university, Chihuly discovered glass art and decided to switch career paths. He then enrolled in the only glass program in the U.S. at the University of Wisconsin in 1965. Chihuly continued to study glass at the Rhode Island School of Design and later formed a glass program at RISD and taught there for over a decade. He worked at the Venini glass factory in Venice on a Fulbright Fellowship and helped found the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State in1971. Chihuly began pioneering the development of glass as an art. In 1968, Chihuly held a solo show at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre, in Paris. He has also created many pieces for large architectural installations. In particular, his project Chihuly Over Venice features sculptures all around the canals and piazzas of Venice. His other well-known exhibition, Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem was installed at the Tower of David Museum. He has also exhibited at places such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Garfield Conservatory in Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and a permanent collection at Chihuly Garden and Glass, which was installed at the Seattle Center in 2012.
