About the artist

Tommie Robinson

American

b. 1947

African American artist. Robinson is considered the first African artist in the Guild of Charlotte Artists. He is best known for addressing a wide range of issues such as racism, sexism and many others through his works of oil, acrylic, watercolor, egg tempura and graphite. Self-taught artist after the death of his father as an outlet for mourning. Joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Attended Central Piedmont Community College and later taught painting and ceramics there. Robinson has had exhibitions at the Mint Museum, the Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture, Van Every & Smith galleries at Davidson College, and many others. Robinson was named the 2015 Africana-Artist-in-Residence.
