About the artist

Berenice Abbott

American

1898-1991

Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) was an American photographer renowned for her black-and-white images of New York's urban landscape, as well as her scientific photography at MIT and portraits of celebrities. She studied sculpture in Paris and Berlin (1921–1923) before starting her photography career as an apprentice to Man Ray in Paris. Upon returning to the U.S., Abbott opened her own portrait studio (1926) and later helped establish the photography department at The New School (1935), where she taught until 1958. Abbott's work spanned urban design, scientific photography, and limited-edition portfolios.
