About the artist

John Brunsdon

British

1933-2014

British painter and printmaker. Brunsdon is a member of the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. He was resident at Digswell House from 1858 to 1863 when he began teaching portrait painting part-time at St. Albans School of Art. He established the printmaking department at St. Albans in 1969, where he taught full-time until moving to Suffolk in 1977. Brunsdon was a full member of The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a founder member of The Printmakers Council. His subject matter consisted largely of landscapes. His images were influenced by American abstract expressionists such as Kline and Motherwell. He was fascinated by man's mark on the landscape, particularly the contrast between buildings and countryside: one temporary the other timeless and primeval.
