About the artist

James Butler

American

b. 1931

British sculptor and drawer. Butler attended the Maidstone School of Art, St Martin’s School of Art and then the Royal College of Art, London. He spent two years in the Royal Corps of Signals and then ten years working as a professional stone carver. He taught drawing and sculpture at the City and Guilds of London Art School from 1960 until 1975. During his years as a professor, he was commissioned to create a statue of President Kenyatta of Kenya for the city of Nairobi. This commission spurred a series of subsequent public and private works. Butler was a member many associations including the Royal Academician, Royal West of England Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He currently lives and practices in Warwickshire, England.
