About the artist

Squeak Carnwath

American

b. 1947

Squeak Carnwath (b. 1947) is an internationally renowned painter and Professor Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley. She received her MFA at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Her work, identified by lush fields of color combined with repeated motifs of text, patterns, and identified images, draws upon the philosophical and mundane experiences of daily life. Carnwath’s work has been exhibited in and acquired by major museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum of Honolulu, the John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and several other accolades, and she has held numerous residencies across the country. Carnwath is also a co-founder of the Artists’ Legacy Foundation. She continues to live and create art in the San Francisco Bay Area.
