About the artist

Karl Schrag

American

1912-1995

German-American painter and printmaker. Graduated from the Humanistisches Gymnasium, Karlsruhe before enrolling at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Geneva in 1931. Due to political climate in Germany, his family moved to Zurich. Not long after he moved to Paris to study painting where he discovered new approaches to color, light and space. Moved to New York due to growing political situation in Germany with his brother where he began to seriously study printmaking. Naturalized in 1944 as American citizen and in 1945 joined Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Taught at Brooklyn College from 1953 to 1954, and then at Cooper Union from 1954 to 1968. Took over Hayter’s etching press after Atelier 17 closed.
