About the artist

Liz Nielsen

American

b. 1975

Studied photography at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she received her BFA, and received an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Creates jewel-toned photograms by first making complex, handmade collages on glass plates comprised of layered transparent gels. Then brings the collages into the darkroom where she shines lights through blocks of color and utilizes flash bulbs and candles to alter the light-sensitive photographic paper. Her unique prints are the result of methodical, technical preparation juxtaposed with intuitive, spur-of-the-moment actions.
