Stephen Shames

American

Stephen Shames uses his photography to raise awareness of social issues — with a particular focus on child poverty, solutions to child poverty, and race — for foundations, advocacy organizations, the media, and museums.

Steve is author of ten monographs including: Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers (Abrams), Bronx Boys (University of Texas Press), Outside the Dream, Pursuing the Dream, The Black Panthers (Aperture), Stephen Shames: Une Retrospective (Maison de la Photographie Robert Doisneau de Gentilly | Red Eye), Bronx Boys e-book (FotoEvidence) Facing Race (Moravian College).

Steve’s photographs are in the permanent collections of major museums, including: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Metropolitan Museum; Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery; International Center of Photography; Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture, Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, University of Texas, Austin; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Bancrol Library, University of California at Berkeley; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; San Jose Art Museum; Philadelphia Museum of Art; National Civil Rights Museum.

Steve received the Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Impact in Photojournalism for Outside the Dream. American Photo named
Steve one of the 15 Most Underrated Photographers. PBS named Hine, Wolco, and Shames as photographers whose work promotes social change.
