Andy Warhol

American

1928-1987

Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) was an American artist known for his screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, soup cans, and sensational newspaper stories. He came from an Eastern European immigrant family but eventually became a bohemian figure in New York's high society. Warhol's early career involved commercial illustrations that were often comic, decorative, and whimsical, a stark contrast to his later cold and impersonal Pop Art pieces. He is credited with breaking down the boundaries between high and low art and pioneering experimental films. Warhol's legacy as an artist, commercial figure, and businessperson is marked by his charisma and ability to influence popular tastes.
