About the artist

William Scott

British

1913-1989

British painter. Known for his non-objective works that explore the space between abstraction and figuration due to his interest in themes of still-life, landscape and the female nude. Attended the Belfast School of Art before painting at the Royal Academy Schools. Exhibited at the Paris Salon d’Automne, 1938. Joined the army in July 1942 with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and then as a lithographic draughtsman with the Royal Engineers. Taught at the Bath Academy of Art as Senior Painting Master before painting full-time from 1956 onward. Represented Great Britain at the 1958 Venice Biennale and at the 1961 São Paulo Bienal where he won the Sanbra (International Critics) Purchase Prize, amongst others.
