About the artist

Gordon House

British

1932-2004

British painter and graphic designer. Studied at Luton and St Albans Schools of Art before working as assistant to Austrian ecclesiastical sculptor Theodore Kern. Worked on restoration of sculpture in bombed churches such as Buckfast Abbey. Started his career in graphic design after joining a small advertising studio in Letchworth. Designed for ICI and Kynoch Press in the 50s and contributed to a new spirit of graphic art. Designed for the pop world in the 60s onward, first the Beatles with their White and Sergeant Pepper albums, later the Wings’ first album. Painted throughout his career as a graphic artist, mainly abstract works that diminished in scale from large, bold canvases to palm-sized landscapes.
