About the artist

Sally Schluter Tardella

American

b. 1957

I usually work in two dimensions, exploring personal ideas of domesticity, gender, place, and culture in drawings, artist books, and paintings. Sugar Sugar is my only ongoing three-dimensional project. I intend this work as a play between language and formal elements-cake titles and color and geometry. I dismantle discarded wooden toys, wood scraps, random home décor, kitchen tools, putting pieces together to make a new object, a sweet dessert, a cake. I color the structure, using paint like icing to unify and empower the new form. The re-purposed domestic bric-a-brac and the dessert title allows a new read, a mnemonic intention for a sweet that may honor a significant event, religious rite, or a cultural celebration. I have returned obsessively to this project-I have made more than 100 cake sculptures since 2008. I am drawn to the whimsy and poetry of this simple idea, as well as the process of deconstructing abandoned objects to assemble something new.

Biography
More than forty years ago Schluter Tardella moved from the east coast to Michigan for graduate school at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She chose to stay. She is inspired by the balance between industry and nature-the rich history and culture of place and people here. Schluter Tardella’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around Michigan and the country. She is Associate Professor Emerita of Art in the Department of Art & Art History at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She hopes the whimsy and poetry of this work, the rhythm of bright colors, will bring joy to viewers. She sees the process of deconstructing abandoned objects to assemble something new as a metaphor for life choices.
