In 1992 she devoted herself to a non-profit organization, Art for Indigenous Survival, teaching soft sculpture to numerous indigenous peoples throughout North and Central America, mentoring young artists along the way.
Shirley's collages capture significant collective experiences in US history, including 1968, the death of George Floyd, and the initial year of the covid pandemic.
