About the artist

David Ryan

American

b. 1971

David Ryan creates multiple layer wall sculptures from mundane materials, like undesirable MDF. Ryan takes inspiration from slick colors and lines of cars, electronic gadgets and household appliances, including functional design classics. The interlocking planes create an interplay of line, shape and shadow, generating perceptual challenges that captivate the viewer, compelling them to spatially interact with the pieces. Just as the physical planes of his work are shaped to reveal deeper layers, his pieces reveal perplexed details, distorting the boundaries between art and design, organic and machine, ordinary and ethereal.

Ryan received his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, before making the move to earn his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he studied under Dave Hickey and Libby Lumpkin. David Ryan resides and works in Las Vegas, Nevada.
