"Robert Sarsony's precise drawings recall the nineteenth-century American luminists, a tradition he revived with new fluency and power. Sarsony defines his images by utilizing the accidental values created by the light playing over the broken surfaces of the objects represented. Line is rarely used and seldom asserts itself in his work, except where the delineation of a single object such as a fine twig stands relieved against a light sky. The judicious use of browns and umbers to establish the basic planes which compose the pictorial unity are handled with an affection that is potently real. Although his paintings are done in an 'a la prima' fashion, Sarsony's mastery of color used almost purely, gives the paintings an assurance which one finds only in the work of the Venetian School"
