Born and raised in Niagara Falls in 1964, Adam Henderson showed an early interest in drawing and painting. While he excelled in art classes throughout high school, he struggled in most other subjects and never seriously considered art as a career.

In 1986, he joined the United States Air Force, serving as an aircraft crew chief. A pivotal moment came in the fall of 1987 while spending a week with family in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. During an evening walk, he discovered a small gallery exhibiting the work of Rebecca Raubacher. Deeply moved by the raw, expressive quality of her paintings, he sought out her studio the following week.

The visit proved transformative. Surrounded by powerful works ranging from intimate portraits to large-scale compositions, he was captivated by Raubacher's direct and fearless approach to painting. What began as admiration evolved into a friendship that has endured for more than three decades.

Later that year, he enrolled in art classes at a local college, where he studied under the respected artist and educator Dr. Donald Parks. Although the traditional academic exercises held little appeal, a class trip to the Museum of Modern Art in New York would leave a lasting impression. There, he encountered the work of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. The experience was revelatory. Their paintings embodied the freedom, energy, and emotional intensity he sought in his own work, inspiring him to fully commit himself to painting.

Upon returning home, he rented a friend's garage and converted it into a studio. Teaching himself how to build and stretch canvases, he began an intensive period of experimentation. Rather than pursuing art as an intellectual exercise, he was drawn to painting as a direct and immersive experience. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, he sought to create works that stand independently of representation, inviting viewers to form their own interpretations and emotional responses.

Since 2020, his work has been represented by Christopher Anthony Ltd. Gallery in Palm Springs, California, and in 2024 by The Zebra Gallery in Easton, MD. His paintings are held in private collections throughout the United States and internationally.

His creative process begins with pencil on canvas. Using free-form marks, spontaneous gestures, and intuitive scribbling, he establishes an initial framework that allows the subconscious to guide the work. Rejecting the notion of a fixed style, he approaches each painting as a unique exploration.

As the composition develops, forms and relationships gradually emerge. Through a process of adding, subtracting, erasing, layering color, and incorporating charcoal, he searches for balance within the evolving image. Unexpected shapes often surface, demanding either integration or elimination. The work develops through intuition rather than predetermined outcomes, allowing each painting to discover its own identity.

Rooted in abstraction yet deeply personal, his paintings embrace uncertainty, movement, and transformation. They invite viewers to engage with the work on their own terms, creating experiences that are as individual as the paintings themselves.
