Ridin’ the Storm Out was born on a cold, gray winter day, when the landscape outside seemed almost completely drained of color. Rather than fight that mood, I allowed it to become the starting point for the painting.

Broad passages of soft gray and muted blue create an expansive, atmospheric landscape, while concentrated areas of blue and violet emerge unexpectedly along the horizon. I worked intuitively, allowing pigment, water, and texture to move across the paper and create a landscape that feels familiar without belonging to any particular place.

Inspired by the music of REO Speedwagon, the title became about more than weather. For me, Ridin’ the Storm Out speaks to those seasons when there is nothing to do but remain steady, trust that circumstances will change, and notice the flashes of beauty that are still present while we wait.

The painting is not about escaping the storm. It is about finding color within it.
