Quagga, 1890 is a ceramic figure based on the quagga, an extinct zebra from southern Africa. I dressed her in an 1890-era riding habit to freeze her in a human moment, part portrait and part costume, so the work reads like an afterimage of something already gone. The piece is meant to feel elegant and unsettling at the same time, a carefully presented presence that history erased.
