They sat side by side in the sun, barely speaking, quietly adjusting themselves on their lounge chairs, a shift of a shoulder, a repositioning of a leg, small movements that never broke their calm. Around them, friends and family moved in and out of the pool, conversations rose and fell, towels fluttered, yet they remained grounded in the moment. As I sketched them, I kept having to adjust what I saw. Their bodies shifted subtly, their posture softened, but their presence never changed, relaxed, peaceful, fully there. It became less about capturing exact likeness and more about capturing that feeling of stillness. Later, I saw them again in the restaurant. Different setting, same quiet ease. That’s when it struck me; it wasn’t about Turks & Caicos or the poolside light at all. It was about how they carried presence into every moment. This painting holds that reminder for me: calm isn’t a place. It’s a way of being.
