As the Valley Reveals Itself by Susan Kurtz

As the Valley Reveals Itself captures the layered beauty of Virginia's New River Valley, where wild grasses, rolling ridges and cultivated land meet beneath an ever-changing sky. Light moves across the landscape, revealing one layer and then another, transforming an ordinary view into a moment of discovery.

Coming to Virginia from New York City, I was struck by a landscape that seemed to reveal itself slowly. The New River Valley was not orderly or contained. Grasses grew wild beside cultivated fields. Mountains appeared behind mountains. Roads disappeared around bends, and changing light could suddenly illuminate a place I thought I already knew.

That sense of discovery stayed with me.

In As the Valley Reveals Itself, the foreground is intentionally untamed. From there, the eye moves outward, through stretches of green and gold, across successive ridges, and finally toward a sky filled with movement. The sunlight travels through those layers, touching one area and then another.

For me, the painting is about more than the New River Valley. It is about the experience of encountering something unfamiliar and gradually learning to see its beauty. Some places do not reveal themselves all at once. They ask us to stay long enough to discover them.
