I am concerned about how medical technology informs our self-perception, shaping disembodied and displaced visual images. My practice and experience in healthcare informs my exploration of painting as a physical and psychological encounter of space.
My approach is inter-medial, crossing boundaries of single disciplines, and embracing expanded visual and auditive spaces. Language and narrative get disrupted and distorted, physically and metaphorically.
Throughout my material investigation aspects of vulnerability and fragmentation are revealed through stretching and pulling. I consider my works as spatial arrangements of layered materials.
My practice is informed by the transgressive and embodied works of Helen Chadwick. It explores spaces between the inside and the outside, skin being considered a metaphor for transformation. I rely on a direct encounter with materials as a visceral and sensual relationship. The process of creation is a constant exploration of performative and transcendent aspects of this relationship.
The works ‘Stretch my Stretch’ is built on repetitive layering of paint and words. The large-scale wall painting is lost (‘Be Large’), a mere memory and being transformed physically into multiple cut and stretched sections (‘Be Small’). What was passed away, giving birth to new works. Original meaning is distorted and disrupted.
Nine cut pieces ‘Be Small’ (15x20cm) installed on matting board, as a transfer and transformation process. What is left is the residue of ‘Be Large’, the past, the memory. Sections unused, not-desired, though still there and preserved.
