सा देवकी सर्वजगन्निवास-निवासभूता नितरां न रेजे ।
भोजेन्द्रगेहेऽग्निशिखेव रुद्धा सरस्वती ज्ञानखले यथा सती ॥
sā devakī sarva-jagan-nivāsa-nivāsa-bhūtā nitarāṁ na reje bhojendra-gehe'gni-śikheva ruddhā sarasvatī jñāna-khale yathā satī
That Devakī, now the residence of the Sustainer of all the universes, did not shine forth in the house of Kaṁsa — like a flame of fire shut up in a pot, or like wisdom held by a virtuous person but choked by a wicked one.
The Art:
The confined glow. The śloka's central image is a flame shut inside a pot — luminous but na reje, "not shining forth." In the art, Devakī is nearly swallowed by black — the whole background is night — yet she holds a small, intensely bright point of light against her body. That light doesn't fill the frame; it's contained, private, almost hidden, exactly as the verse describes: brilliance present but withheld from the world by her captivity.
The vertical shaft of blue and white. Above her, a column of blue, white, and a single red-orange streak rises out of the dark like something breaking through a ceiling. This reads as the descent/transference itself — the Lord passing into Devakī "by dīkṣā," as the commentary on this verse describes it, not born in an ordinary way but transmitted into the core of her being. The upward-reaching brushwork suggests that channel between worlds is already open, even while she herself remains shadowed below.
Her posture and stillness. She's turned inward, cradling the light rather than displaying it — devotional containment rather than triumph. That matches sarasvatī jñāna-khale yathā satī: knowledge held by a virtuous person choked by a wicked one, present but not yet given to the world. She knows what she carries; no one else can see it yet.
The title itself — acyutāṁśam, "the portion/fragment of the Imperishable One" — is quietly literal in the image: only a fragment of light shows, the rest is implied, waiting for Kaṁsa's house to no longer be able to hold it.
So the composition works almost like a visual gloss on the verse: darkness = Bhojendra-gehe (Kaṁsa's house) as prison; the contained flame = Devakī's suppressed radiance; the descending blue shaft = the cosmic Sustainer already entering her, even before the world can see it.
