The Stranger Was Panning for Gold by Spence Guerin

The Stranger Was Panning for Gold, c. 1979

Conte Crayon on Plywood

20.375 x 35.5 x 0.25 in

Inv: SG-2277

It is late Spring or early summer along Willow Creek road to Hatcher Pass. Snow patches remain on the mountains up near the pass. An unknown person is at a car parked along the road, the trunk of the car is open, the man is doing something on the hood of his car. It was later determined the man was panning for gold. A small stream with at least two beaver dams flows on the right side, amongst the willows and spruce. A small bird is on a rock at bottom left. Mosquitoes and other insects are in the air. This is a black and white Conte Crayon drawing on 1/4-inch plywood, intended to be utilized for a woodcut, but that was not achieved.
