ABOUT THIS PRINT
Springtime in the Talkeetna Mountains near Hatcher Pass, not far from Palmer and Wasilla, Alaska. Winter is behind us and the snow is melting. Willow Creek meanders in the valley below. There are beaver ponds. Across the valley Wet Gulch is feeding snowmelt water into the creek. Spruce and birch are in the lower elevations. Among the patches of snow on the slope in front of us are willow, soon to bud.
Image source was a photograph made by the artist on Willow Creek-Hatcher Pass road north of Wasilla, Alaska. The drawing work was accomplished at the Visual Arts Center of Alaska in Anchorage.
PROCESS DESCRIPTION
The image was drawn with Korn's #5 litho crayon pencil directly on ball-grained aluminum plate cut to fit a Heidelberg commercial offset printing press at Van Cleve Printing, Anchorage. Upon completion of the crayon drawing, the artist processed the plate with liquid asphaltum, and transferred the image into lacquer image base. Before printing, the artist calendared the Arches Cover paper on a hand lithography press at the Visual Arts Center, with two passes through the press, in order to flatten and smooth the paper surface, to enhance its printability on an offset litho press.
