Whole Cloth Sampler Quilt, 1980

Fine cotton with a cotton batting, off-white lace trims the cafe au lait colored teaching sampler. Lucy’s creation artfully shows variations of quilting stitches and her unusual cable and feather borders interlock as they gracefully frame the square. She incorporated her design principle to balance the quilting over the entire quilt. The density of her quilting or the number of stitches is the same all over the sampler. Lucy felt that whole cloth quilt was a challenge of quilting negative space with push-pull lines to bring the viewer’s eye into and out of the design. Lucy used this as her teaching tool in her courses.
