Inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha, this luminous side-profile portrait honors the tayu—women celebrated as walking works of art. Rich reds and yellows in her elaborate attire contrast with a soft halo of blues and purples, while the frame itself becomes sculpture: each flower individually shaped and gilded to create an intricate Rococo setting. The composition balances fragility and discipline, turning the figure into a living icon of art and self-mastery.

Artist’s Note

A Tayu was never just a courtesan—she was art in motion, trained in music, poetry, and presence. I built this frame flower by flower to echo that devotion to craft. Beauty here isn’t decoration; it’s discipline and power woven together.
