This framed work is from my series "What’s Black and White And Red All Over?
An African American Russian Jewish Red Diaper Baby". I had wished for the large box of crayons for a long, long time. Every few days, I looked at the Crayolas in the stationary store. I dreamed about them. All those colors! For some special occasion, I finally was given the box of 64 Crayola crayons! I carefully, slowly, joyously took them out of the box, one by one and spread them out side by side, on the floor, marveling at this immense row of delicious colors. I picked them up reverently, holding each one in my hand fascinated by each wonderful color until I saw the flesh crayon. I remember that I looked at my arm and then at the crayon, and at my arm again. I looked again and again, at my arm, then at the crayon. It didn’t match and didn’t make sense. I stayed there, sitting on the floor staring at the crayon and at my arm, my stomach turning.
