Each year artist Simone Paterson picks a word to focus her goals for the year. Her 2022 word is ‘service.’

“My art is in service to me living my best life possible. As an artist, I serve my community, giving inspiration and courage to live authentically and honestly listening to my inner knowing to produce meaningful work that helps us feel connected.”

Paterson recently transitioned from working as an art professor at Virginia Tech to developing her own arts-based business. “My goal is to make a living as an artist in Roanoke. I am happy to report that I have some collectors who eagerly await the release of new work, and I am not starving.” This year, she will serve as a City of Roanoke Artist in Residence at the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s EnVision Center.
