Eating Black Square is a 60-inch square oil on canvas that explores the tension between containment and transformation. A nod to Malevich’s icon, the central black square is reimagined not as a static symbol of purity, but as a form being metabolized by movement. Utilizing twine to drag, twist, and snap lines across the wet surface, Raj creates a rhythmic disruption that frays the square’s rigid edges. The surrounding white and gray fields act as a consuming yet non-destructive force. Ultimately, the work represents a rebellion against old icons, suggesting that creativity must absorb and evolve past monuments to find new life.
