Title: Seance Smog
Description:
Step into the enigmatic world of “Seance Smog,” a captivating mixed media artwork by Riley Vandervest, crafted in 2021. Presented on canvas, this piece measures 20 inches by 16 inches with a depth of 0.5 inches, offering a glimpse into a realm where the physical and the spectral converge.
“Seance Smog” envelops the viewer in a dense, atmospheric scene where deep blacks, dark greens, and shades of grey dominate, creating an environment that feels both oppressive and mysterious. The artwork uses bold, sweeping brushstrokes to depict a fog-like smog, with subtle layers of lighter hues breaking through, suggesting ghostly presences or energies trying to communicate from beyond. The mixed media technique adds a textured depth, potentially incorporating materials that evoke the tactile sensation of mist or smoke, enhancing the piece’s otherworldly quality.
The composition is intentionally chaotic, with lines and forms that suggest movement within the fog, perhaps spirits or energies in motion during a seance. A prominent feature is the contrast between the dark, heavy base and the lighter, more ethereal elements, which might symbolize the thin veil between our world and the next.
The title “Seance Smog” alludes to a gathering where the living attempt to contact the dead, shrouded in this mysterious fog that could obscure or reveal. Vandervest’s technique here is nuanced, using a mix of aggressive and delicate strokes to convey both the weight of the atmosphere and the subtle presence of the unseen. This piece is both haunting and hopeful, suggesting that within the smog, there is a possibility of connection or revelation.
