“Noorun Ala Noor,” meaning “Light upon Light,” delves into the essence of divine illumination and cosmic spirituality. This exhibition, the first of its kind in Mumbai, showcases over 50 works inspired by Middle Eastern sacred geometric designs, which have influenced traditional Indian art and architecture over centuries. Through diverse mediums, including calligraphy, traditional illumination paintings, sacred geometry, and multimedia installations, thirteen international artists explore the intricate interplay between light, spirituality, and geometry. These artworks create a space for contemplation, cultural exchange, and intellectual discourse, bridging traditional artistry with contemporary expression. Rooted in cosmic principles, geometric patterns in traditional art symbolize divine order and infinity, transforming physical spaces into realms of spiritual reflection. By reinterpreting these motifs, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with the timeless connection between material and spiritual realms, celebrating the enduring vitality of sacred art.
Arabic calligraphy is the light of my life–literally! From captivation at a young age to devotion to its study to present-day vocation, it has shaped my life now for over two decades. I believe that the graceful contours of calligraphy now have the power to shape my thoughts just as they grace my paper or canvas. The insightful quote “Calligraphy is engineering of the spirit” has guided my insatiable enquiry and desire to learn this art and craft–an art that always inspires and a craft that never tires.
