Returning to the same places every year holds great significance. The drawing Sand is the result of revisiting and observing, over many years, high sand dunes gradually being reclaimed by the sea, and of being surprised each year by the progress of change. Every time, the same sites appear different yet strikingly beautiful. So, the natural event and beauty come first and are the inspiration. And then, one year, an alarm sounds that the house on top of the dune is in danger, prompting reflection on landslides elsewhere and the effects of climate change.
In this drawing on a collaged composition, I used Arches watercolor paper and various artist-made abaca papers. The combination of different kinds of papers, the design, and the shape of the piece are as important as the drawing itself.
