When I place paint on paper or canvas I can count on the material to move fluidly across the surface. Creating work using colored pulp paper and applying it to a base sheet of pulp is a very different experience. Once the color is placed, it doesn't move. Instead, it absorbs into the substrate and the whole piece becomes what I think of as an object. I can layer the material but inevitably some of the first images aren’t fully covered and will show up unexpectedly. These surprise elements inspire me to shift the narrative and composition of the piece. If I’m working with one figure what happens to the dynamic when another one shows up? Where are they relative to each other? It’s these questions that drive my work.
For example, who's that guy in the middle of “Hidden Couple”? And in the piece called “Coupling” the two figures want to connect. However, the amount of space surrounding them could indicate that they have a long way to go before they’ll be able to get together in a meaningful way.
