About the artist

Dan Kainz

b. 1949

Dan Kainz describes his sculptures as "approachable and real." He has great respect for stone, a natural element that is life supporting. Dan explains, "In addition to having been used in every capacity, it is the foundation of our world. Each boulder of stone that I see has a tale to tell. Are we thrown back to our past ... or moved ahead into oµr future? It is the legacy that interests me, the idea of creating a timeless C image, a gift of material and vision from our ancestors." Dan's long apprenticeship with European artists and stone carvers has resulted in a plurality of activity: early sculpture for which he was awarded a National Endowment grant, designing and building fine furniture, creating and fabricating large displays for commercial interiors in wood, plastic laminate and acrylic, adding a sculpture. division to his family's stone-cutting business and, finally, producing the monumental sculpture of which he has always dreamed, sixty pieces since 1991.
