'What a Bam Bam' is a tribute to the vibrant and rich culture of West Indian and Caribbean Carnival. Originally created in 2018 and remade in 2021, this piece celebrates the essence of Carnival—a celebration of unity, togetherness, and the joy of life.
The concept behind 'What a Bam Bam' was to showcase the diversity and beauty of women participating in Carnival, known as 'mas'. Each woman depicted in the artwork wears a unique costume, reflecting the kaleidoscope of colors, styles, and traditions seen during Carnival celebrations. From extravagant feathered headdresses to intricately beaded outfits, every costume tells a story and contributes to the vibrant tapestry of Carnival culture.
Despite their differences, these women come together under the shared banner of 'Mas is life!'. This phrase encapsulates the spirit of Carnival—a time for revelry, freedom, and expression. It's a celebration of culture, heritage, and community, where people from all walks of life come together to dance, sing, and embrace the joy of being alive.
Through 'What a Bam Bam', I aimed to capture the energy and excitement of Carnival while also highlighting the unity and solidarity among its participants. It's a reminder that regardless of our backgrounds or differences, we can come together to celebrate our shared humanity and embrace the beauty of diversity.
As Carnival continues to evolve and adapt over the years, 'What a Bam Bam' serves as a timeless homage to this vibrant cultural tradition. It's a celebration of life, love, and the power of community—a testament to the enduring spirit of Carnival that lives on in the hearts of those who participate and cherish its traditions.
