Metamorphosis (DMH)

Handmade tiles, luminous glass, mirror shards, and crystal beads

The large-scale design is immediately visible upon entering the building. The light palette created from luminous glass adds softness and a sense of calm to transform the space and to create a welcome diversion from what may be a stressful experience.

The work is intended to create a calm and reassuring welcome. The luminous glass tiles are brought to life with the everchanging natural light from the windows, causing the artwork to change every hour of the day and night. The shimmering tiles and shards of mirror have a sense of movement catching the viewer’s eye from afar and drawing people closer to view the artwork details and hidden messages.

The design includes handmade tiles impressed with inspirational quotes and words. Each individually glazed tile subtly becomes part of the larger mosaic and can draw the view from afar, to discover the meaningful messages.

The design palette and shapes were inspired by the colors of some of the most common Ohio butterflies. The leaves and blossoms have been inspired by the milkweed plant, a naturally occurring habitat and food source for the monarch butterfly in Ohio.

The second-floor artwork compliments the design on the opposite wall. The same palette and themes are re-imagined in a horizontal format and each butterfly is unique in size, color, and design. Because the artwork is at eye level, it encourages patients and staff to view these images up close to discover inspiring and thoughtful messages embedded in the handmade tiles
