Itō Shinsui (1898–1972) was one of the leading artists of Japan’s Shin-hanga (new prints) movement and is best known for his elegant portraits of women (bijin-ga). A student of Kaburagi Kiyokata, Shinsui combined traditional Japanese aesthetics with refined modern sensibilities, creating images celebrated for their beauty, grace, and subtle use of colour. Working closely with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, he produced some of the most iconic prints of the 20th century and was later recognized by the Japanese government as a Living National Treasure for his contributions to traditional woodblock printmaking. Today, his works are among the most admired and sought-after examples of Shin-hanga art.
