About the artist

Shelley Thornton

Shelley Thornton is a lifelong artist of varied endeavors. She earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska, with major studies in printmaking and graphic design. She has worked in illustration, animation, toymaking, graphic design, quiltmaking, and clothing design and fabrication. She has lived in Nebraska most of her life, but also worked in New York City for two and a half years. She currently creates one-of-a-kind cloth art dolls. She conceives of her dolls as collages, calling attention to things of aesthetic delight, juxtaposing disparate found patterns, colors, and textures into unexpected and meaningful relationships. Her hope is that a profoundly rendered human form will serve as a familiar, approachable canvas on which to express, in the languages of color and form, the feelings of comfort, serenity, compassion, and optimism that she hopes to contribute to a difficult world.
