As I discovered on my walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, it is not the monochrome object that it appears to be at a distance. Several layers of exposed paint and rust with varying levels of oxidation mottle its surface. Beyond the view and the engineering this--and the amount of art deco metalwork--defined my experience of the bridge. So in this image of decorative metal work above the pedestrian walkway I pulled each variation in different directions, in a sense literalizing the golden gate.
