Francis Leekya (d) was the only son of Leekya Deyuse(d), one of the most celebrated carvers in Zuni history. Francis learned to carve from his father and developed a distinct carving style . Both men often used Zuni Stone, a Native Travertine found in Zuni, as this Wolf is, and which is another distinctive feature of Leekya fetishes. This wolf has Francis’ characteristic incised mouth and nostrils, as well as the body proportion and identifying prayer bundle with coral, natural turquoise and an offering of abalone shell. Francis passed in 2003.
