Ellen Quandelacy(d) was known for her horses (and other domestic animals), uniquely designated as female or male. Her gender-correct carvings are “old-style” (traditional) and charming. They are treasured for their unique simplicity and attention to particular anatomical details. Stallions are very different creatures from mares! She would incise the manes and tails on both sides of her horses, took good care with their grooming (polishing), and inlaid natural turquoise eyes.
