In Progress

"The Crucifixion" is the twelfth piece in McClung's Stations of the Cross, the series of fourteen she worked on over a decade, and she paints it here as a three-panel work. The middle panel shows Christ on the cross, with a small group of mourners gathered at its base, while the left and right panels depict the two thieves crucified alongside him. The thief on Jesus's right, in the left panel, is the one who acknowledged his sin and repented, and McClung marks him with a large shaft of yellow light falling across his cross. Set on top of Red Mountain overlooking Birmingham, Alabama, the whole scene is unexpected in its color: rather than the dark, heavy tones often used for this subject, McClung floods it with bright yellows, golds, greens, and lavenders, giving the crucifixion a radiance that reads less as an ending than as a moment already touched by what comes after.
