This 2009 self-portrait belongs to McClung's Going Home series, painted when she was 73 years old. She shows herself standing inside her Birmingham, Alabama studio, looking out through a large paned window with small vases lined up along the sill and the green of the outside world pressing in through the glass. The whole scene is washed in cool greens, blues, and soft ochres, painted with quick, urgent brushstrokes that give the studio a sense of movement and impermanence, as if the room is dissolving around her. Her own face appears in the upper panes, calm but searching, looking out at a world she has spent a lifetime observing and painting. It is a thoughtful, layered work, one of the most ambitious paintings of her later career and a clear meditation on the passage of time.
