This 2011 self-portrait is part of McClung's Going Home series, painted when she was 75 years old. Only her face is fully rendered at the top of the canvas, peering out from a doorway, while the rest of the composition is left raw and exposed, with long drips of brown paint running down the bare canvas like rain on a window. The unfinished feeling is the point, suggesting a figure caught in the act of leaving, or perhaps already half-gone, with the artist using the medium itself to express the slow process of letting go. It is a brave, honest piece of work from an artist confronting her own aging, and one of her most experimental late-career paintings.
