"Overlooking Birmingham" by Miriam McClung, 1995, is a pastel and pen drawing on grey paper that looks down over Birmingham from Red Mountain. McClung uses loose, quick marks — hatching, scribbled lines, and layered pastel — to map the city below, it's landmarks, and mountains in the distance. Color is used selectively: bursts of orange, red, and warm yellow punctuate an otherwise muted palette. The grey paper does a lot of work, holding the composition together without additional details. The scale is modest but the view is wide, capturing the city, its surroundings, and a dramatic banded sky in a single glance.
