Gesture, No. 3 is a visual translation of movement, energy, and the physical act of connection. As both a painter and a specialist in rare 1970s vinyl, Melanie Davis treats the canvas as a dance floor. Each lineform is created while dancing to a specific track, making the artwork a direct physical record of the music’s rhythm.

The piece pulls from a heavy analog aesthetic—the bold, interlocking "tubes" echo the stripes of vintage athletic gear and the coiled patch cables of 1970s modular synthesizers. Set against a vibrant, textured chartreuse foundation that mimics the warm "hiss" of a needle on vinyl, the deep navy, crimson, and burnt orange forms weave into a dense, central knot.

Completed in January 2020, it is a high-fidelity celebration of togetherness and marks the last dance party hosted before lockdown - before the world went quiet and the needle was pulled from the record of public life.
