She met Zarco at an event where he was storytelling. Drawn to his presence, she worked up the courage to talk to him, and said “we should be friends.”
After a few weeks as social media friends, Zarco invited her to his studio. Once she arrived, he suggested that to be friends, she would have to learn traditional mask making and perform in the masks she makes at his events. She agreed, even though she admitted she didn’t know his work as an artist or with Cultural Coalition.
“After being his apprentice for two years, I had no idea he would teach me the type of art I have secretly been looking for in my heart. Knowing and learning from Zarco has been the best thing I have ever done for myself.
I have him and his wife to thank. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here now fulfilling a dream that I had no idea could come true.”
