Martina Latimer’s practice is guided by a continuing question: how images can articulate meaning beyond language. Her works exist between presence and absence, where thin layers of oil paint, blurred forms, and painted lines suggest emotional states without fully defining them. Her mark-making feels immediate, intimate, and recognisably human. Working in series allows repetition to reveal difference, where subtle variations emerge. It is within these shifts that meaning often resides. Latimer draws on found digital photographs, zooming into areas that hold her attention before enlarging them on canvas. An image of a couple in embrace initiated this body of work. The anonymity of the figures is central, allowing movement between the particular and the universal.
