Found at the base of a tree in Virginia, this common polypore grows in shelving rows, one cap layered over the last, sometimes over several years. Its cap runs banded, dark brown fading to reddish-brown and yellow at the edge, with a velvety surface and a tough, corky flesh beneath. It's also known as oak conk.
